You maybe have sunshine...

...but we have the Carribean Sea! After 7 weeks of travelling we reached the geographical peak and final destination of our travel route which at the beginning looked pretty far and unrealistic. Already last monday we reached Cartagena, Colombia, by some called the most beautiful city of South America. Surely it is one of the most historical one

Founded by the Spaniards in 1533 in fastly became an important location for the american-european trade. The Spanish organized the trade with the Americas in a very strict and completly controlled way. Once a year one convoi of ships left to Central America, then viceroyality of Mexico, and one to South America, then Viceroyality of Peru. The southern route led via the carribean coast of nowadays Colombia with an obligatory stop in Cartagena. On the way back, before unifying with the Nothern fleet in Cuba, the ships stopped here, too, loaded with the richness of the new world, before going back to Sevilla. The valuable armada had to pass risky waters, pirates waited to get their part of the big cake. Cartagena and the whole region became the origin of countless pirate stories. The "flotas" were therefore protected by the Spanish armada, and Cartagena became more and more a fortress. Rich merchants houses inside and the big wall and defensing forts sourrounding the city.

We arrived with less valuables than the conquerers (my second flipp-flopps broke after 2 weeks of using them, rising again questions about foot fashion) and were basicly shocked by the heat. It was hard to enjoy the beauty of the city, our views were clouded by the sweat from our foreheads, and our noses effected by the smell of fish over the whole town. But since our arrival we know why the sea in Monañita for some people still could be a cold water, while we do not have sufficent fruits in the rest of the world and salsa waves reached shores around the globe.
