With Mari and Vivi

There´s always time for a jump of joy (thanks Faautu)! And while the new volunteers get in touch with their first manifestation around the corner (against a municipal ley against manifestations), on plaza de mayo it´s time to thank two great women. Mari (right hand side), it´s great that you are here, doing the nurses job and answering 48 questions per hour, its fun to talk with you about the cultures and have somebody to share the mate. And Vivi (left hand side), you definitly backed my year, doing a lot of paperwork for me, creating the volunteers boletin, having the good mood when I was grumpy, convincing all men (and most of women, too) of the IERP world of the sense of the program, being pacient with my spanish and lots more. Que siguas con esta luz y fuerza! Dicker Abrazo!

Llegaron los nuevos!

Das sind sie, die neuen, die seit 5 Tagen das ISEDET (und mich) unsicher machen. Fragt mich nicht, wer genau Jonas und wer genau Johannes ist (einer heisst immer Johannes), ob Hanna oder Laura in die Casa San Pablo gehen, dafuer habe ich jetzt 3 Wochen Zeit, um es heraus zu finden. Morgens Sprachkurs, den Rest vom Tag alles andere, wir wechseln die Welten wie den Mate, von deutscher Botschaft ins Armenviertel, von Murga zum Univortrag. Wie immer gab es schon erste Beschwerdebriefe (dafuer diesmal nur anonym), wie immer kann ich nur wetten, wie es wohl mit dem Visum ausgeht, wie immer fange ich nachts an zu traeumen, dass sich irgendwer eine schlimme Krankheit eingefangen hat und wie immer sind alle blond, viel blonder als in Deutschland erlaubt ist. Sonst aber glaube ich, dass wir eine Menge Spass miteinander haben werden. Zumindest genauso viel wie die Gebirgsjaeger die fuer 2 Wochen zum athletisch - ballistischen Wettstreit nach Argentinien eingeladen werden, wie wir heute in der Botschaft erfahren haben. Hatte noch irgendwer Fragen, ob weltwaerts Gelder sinnvoll eingesetzt sind?

Pig flu in Argentina

Right in time after the elections, pig flue takes over the country. Since one week, news are full of the influenca and politics and privates are asking what to do. With 55 deaths up till now, Argentina now is among the most effected countries. Schools allover the country closed down this week, as well as universities, kindergardens and courts, in some cities all public life like cafes, cinemas and shoppings has been closed down. Desinfecting alcohol lotions and face masks are sold out all over the country, while the suburbans already discovered it as the big business and sell it on the street.

Like many times, the up till now taken meassures are not effecting the poor. Closing down schools makes kids in the barrios hanging around on the streets, pleading to use desinfecting lotions can't be efforded, asking to use dry food in the soup kitchens doesn't make sense since the families dont have proper kitchens to cook. So the feedback from the social proyects in great Buenos Aires is quite different from reactions elsewhere. Completly closing down, would even multiply the bad effects for the most vulnerable groups of Argentine society. Not a single word about that in the big newspapers, media hysteria of pig flu is the scare of the middle class.

Therefore, while you in Cologne and Berlin celebrated in masses 40 years of the stonewall uprising (congrats!), I unfortunately had to decide for a calm weekend at home in self ordered isolation. Nevertheless, ISEDET´s famous hot salsa night took place on thursday, yet under stricter hygienical rules. My neighbour Thiago invited to a real feijoada and you can see a big part of my international home bases: Roberta (Italia), Vero (Ecuador), Simona (Italia), David (Colombia), Thiago (Brazil), Alejandra (Uruguay), the Brazilian friends Gilson and Luiz and Hanna (Germany).

Wahlnachlese

So sehen Sieger aus, gestatten: Franzisco de Narváez. Er hat bei den Midterms bei denen letzten Sonntag die Haelfte des argentinischen Parlaments neu gewaehlt wurde, den Ex-Presidenten Nestor Kirchner in der Provinz Buenos Aires geschlagen (34% zu 32%) und damit den wichtigsten Wahlbezirk (37% der gesamten Stimmen des Landes) fuer sich gewonnen. Es ist nicht nur ein Sieg fuer ihn, sondern fuer alle, die vom Regime "K" die Nase voll haben. Die K-Peronisten verlieren ihre Mehrheit im Parlament und in der Kammer der Provinzen. Mit diesem Sieg ist es mit den Kirchners in Argentinien vorbei. Weder Cristina Kirchner noch Nestor werden in 2011 als Praesidentschaftskandidaten antreten koennen. De Narváez laeutet zum Ende der Kirchner Aera.

Unterstuetzt hat de Narváez dabei eine wilde Koalition aus "Anti K" Peronisten (also eigentlich linken Kraeften) und den Rechtsliberalen der Pro-Bewegung. Das wusste de Narvaéz direkt zu danken und widmete seinen Wahlsieg Mauricio Macri (rechts im Bild), den er damit eindeutig zur Praesidentschaftskanditatur in 2011 aufgefordert hat. Macri ist Chef der Stadt Buenos Aires und geht seit 2 Jahren mit einem kraeftigen Aufraeumdiskurs gegen Armut und Unorganisiertheit vor- zumindest rhetorisch. Auch fuer ihn lief die Wahl nicht schlecht, seine Frontfrau in Capital, Gabriele Michetti (Rollstuhlfahrerin) landete klar auf dem ersten Platz in Buenos Aires.

Ob Macri in 2011 aber ein Chance hat, ist noch voellig offen und wird vor allem davon abhaengen, wer sein Gegner wird. Denn jetzt muessen sich die Peronisten neu sortieren und ihre neue Nummer eins suchen. Das koennte z.B. der den Kirchnern abtruenninge Peronist und ehemalige Rennfahrer Reutemann werden. Auch die traditionelle rechte Oposition, die Radikalen, koennten noch einen Kandidaten der Mitte aufstellen und damit vor Macri das Rennen machen.

Alles scheint auf 2011 hinzuarbeiten, obwohl noch 2,5 Jahre Regierungsarbeit anstehen. Dank Praesidialerlassen und umfangreichen Rechten hat Cristina in dieser Zeit noch viel Gestaltungskraft. Ihr Versuch mit vorgezogenen Neuwahlen mehr Stimmen einzufangen, bevor die Weltwirtschaftskrise Argentinien richtig trifft, ist aber ordentlich nach hinten los gegangen. Ob die Opposition besser ist, sei dahin gestellt. De Narváez ist aus unerklaerlichen Quellen Millionaer, Macri an der Stadtreinigung von Capital beteiligt, sozusagen Koelner Verhaeltnisse.

Neben Alkoholverbot am Wahltag, Wahlpflicht und einem wilden Wahlzettelprinzip ist mir vor allem aufgefallen, wieviele Menschen hier davon sprechen, dass sie froh sind, dass es ruhig geblieben ist, dass es wahrscheinlich keinen Wahlbetrug gab und dass man an vielen Orten zittert, wie die Regierung auf den Machtverlust reagiert. Normalitaet in einem Land, dass erst vor 25 Jahren zur Demokratie zurueck gekehrt ist.

Finals in Baradero

Final seminar in the volunteer programm during the last week, freezing weather but warm and intense atmosphere. So what happened in one year with the volunteers? Julius and Jakob became certified barkeepers (from top left to down right), Anne and Simone best friends, Lennart started to believe that volunteers could be good people, Katharina leaves pregnant and Stephan as future father, and Leo changed her plans and want to become midwife now. Surely there were about 35 stories more, big ones and small ones and all together we are continuing with hope, vamos!

Ohne Jorge

Da hat er es also doch gemacht: Mein Boss Jorge hat uns allein gelassen und wird seinen neuen Job als Gemeindepfarrer der methodistischen Kirche in Uruguay antreten. Wie wird er dort in Zukunft seine 70 Stunden Woche fuellen? Welche Randgruppen er da wohl findet? Wieviele internationale Besucher werden den Río ueberqueren? Und: Wen wird er mit seiner Kreativitaet und seinem Durchblick in Bann ziehen?

Jorge hat uns alleine gelassen mit seiner letzten Nachricht: „Hallo an alle, von wem sind die Nudeln im Gefrierfach?“ Er wird es nie erfahren: Es waren meine, diese Nudeln, die er vor einem halben Jahr so fuersorglich verstaut hatte, so dass ich sie nie wieder gefunden habe. Wer wird uns demnaechst Zettel an die Tueren haengen? Jorge, wenn du jemals auf diese Seit kommen solltest, danke dafuer, dass du uns alle so genommen hast wie wir sind, und uns Einblicke und Ausblicke in diese Welt gegeben hast, die uns vorher verborgen waren. Copying for development

ACT development assembly in Buenos Aires. One of the best things was getting to know the famous BAUEN Hotel, taken over by the workers in 2002 after the owners decided to close down the hotel as a result of Argentina´s heavy economic crisis. 7 years later, the legal situation of the hotel still isn´t solved, the number of workers has rised from 50 to 200, still sharing decisions and income amog them and having reached to reanimate the hotel´s life. As one of the outcomes of the economic crisis in 2001, in Argentina exist around 200 "occupied fabrics". So if Magna fails with Opel, that might be another solution.

Kilometro 30

Roundabout somewhere between Ciudad del Este and Coronel Oviedo, Paraguay. Junction of the routes 6 and 7. I am waiting for a ride to Hohenau, sun has set already at 17.30, leaving the scenery spotlighted by streetlamps and the flames of mobile street kitchens. Middle aged women with wide hips and short skirts sell chipa to bypassing car drivers, families offloading numerous suitcases on the dusty ground and ticket sellers with pink paperrolls scroll around their territory. The noise of bypassing rural pick ups dont disturb the family life around their empanada business. Sitting on a rotten bank, an older lady with convincing smile who lives in the neighbourhood offers me her telephone number. Next time that I pass here, I shall call here. Then she will cook a real paraguayan dish for me.

Bei Doemels zwischen Chipa, Schulbesuch und Zwiebelkuchen

Gestatten: die Doemels aus Pirayú, Paraguay. Von links nach rechts: Manuela, Aleks und Jamin (Voluntaere und Spitzenkoeche), die Kinder Luisa und Nico und die beiden Capos Lisa und Uli. Die Besetzung wechselt regelmaessig, immer wieder sitzten Freunde mit am Tisch oder eine frisch aus Deutschland ausgewanderte Familie. Besser als in jeder Aussteigersendung bekommt man hier eine gute Idee, wer die BRD satt hat (verdammt haeufig Leute aus dem Osten!) und wie sie sich dann in der Pampa schlagen. Solltet ihr das auch vorhaben und mit Paraguay eines der Laender mit den niedrigsten Einwanderungshuerden (5000 US-Dollar) waehlen, seid ihr bei Lisa und Uli richtig. Lisa verhandelt ueber Autos und Haeuser, besorgt Fuehrerscheine und diskutiert mit der Auslaenderbehoerde stundenlang und, wenn es sein muss, bis zur Chefetage ueber die noetigen Papiere.

Warum man sie sonst lieben muss? Wegen ihrem Leberkaese (hausgemetzgert), badischen Spezialitaeten zum Abendessen, den besten Matratzen im Voluntariado-Kosmos und vor allem wegen ihrem Sozialprojekt. Seit einem Hungerwinter Mitte der 90er haben sie mit einem Patenkindprojekt in der benachbarten Armensiedlung angefangen, heute gehen dank der Unterstuetzer aus Deutschland etwa 30 Kinder auf die Schule, koennen Buecher kaufen und erhalten schulische Betreuung. Und die Doemels machen weiter, die Vision heute heisst Berufsschule. Voraussichtlich im Winter werden sie anfangen mit Metzger-, Computer-, Naeh-und Hauswirtschaftskursen, um den mittlerweile ausgewachsenen Patenkindern auch nach der Schule Perspektiven zu ermoeglichen.

Semana de los aborigenes

I arrived in time to celebrate the panamerican week of the aborigenes in the IERP supported school for the people of Takuapi, a small indigenous community close to Ruiz de Montoya in the province of Misiones. As if some director had put me into a documentary about contemporary indian lifestyle, I was accompanying the community performing traditional dances on the central square, shooting with arrows, singing, greeting, talking differently.

Even more: Differences to the european lifestyle were so obvious that I have to speak in cliches while describing. Kids were much closer to nature, showing me animals which I hadn't ever noticed, walking barefooted everywhere, talking the first rainy day in months completely for granted, and beyond, there was no annoying noise, no boredom and almost no violence among them. Especially by comparing with all projects with kids elsewhere, it finally became so hard to say what's progress. At the same time, living conditions in the wooden huts without any further equipment, appealed to me so poor, that I could never imagine myself living or surviving there. The school of Takuapi tries the mission impossible by enabling keeping and promoting the traditional culture of the community of Takuapi and adopting them at the same time to culture of mayoritarian Argentinian Society. It was a great pleasure participating for two days.

Casita Numero Uno!

Schnell muss ich euch noch das zweitwichtigste Ereignis der letzten Wochen (nach dem Gipfel in London) erzaehlen. Ich bin in den Hof gezogen, in die Casita Numero Uno! Einige Schlaukoepfe meinen, ich habe damit den Garten Eden betreten. Und ich muss ihnen sagen, sie haben recht. Dennoch, trotz eigener Kuechenzeile und eigener Dusche, auch das Leben im Patio ist kein Wunschkonzert.

- Die Bewohner von oben beobachten. Alles, was man tut.
- Das Summen der Dengue Muecken (20.000 Faelle seit 2 Wochen) klingt bestaendig in den Ohren.
- Seit dem Umzug habe ich mehr Asado essen muessen als im letzten halben Jahr zusammen. Der Grill ist liegt direkt vor meiner Tuer.
- Man hoert die Nachbarn doch. Und zwar jedes Wort.
- Freitags wird man zum In-Zungen-Reden eingeladen.
- Internet faellt auch im Hof staendig aus.

Soviel aus Buenos Aires. Die naechsten 3 Wochen bin ich auf Einsatzstellenbesuch in Paraguay, Misiones und dem Chaco. Und ich hoffe, dass ich euch von dort neue Bilder mitbringe!

Another crisis

The german weekly Der Spiegel starts the week of the London summit with big expectations. „How one can save the world's economy“ is the headline of their recent published edition. But will it really be the object of the meeting of world leaders the comming weekend? Or isn't it rather about saving the rich countries from higher unemployment and less earnings?

It doesn't matter who you ask about the economic crisis here in Argentina, you always get the same response: „We have always lived in crisis“. It's true. Not only the latest big economic crisis' in 1989 and 2001, the overall state of economy simply isn't comparable (look at the GNI figures).

It seems accidentally that Argentina has a seat at the table in London. Generating only 0,3% of world trade (USA 12,5%; Germany 9%; Netherlands 3,7%), it won't have a lot of influence. Biggest preocupation of the Argentinian press will be, whether Cristina will behave well and arrive in time for the group picture (and not like in Washington shaming 5 minutes too late).

While Argentina definitly has a story to tell. When the Argentinian economy collapsed in 2001, big part of responsibility was due to the IMF and the Worldbank, those institutions again in focus today. Forcing the country to follow its neoliberal recipes, the country faced a big incline of national industries, the sale of all big state owned enterprises, couldn't apply a sovereign currency policy and had to end up in an even bigger dept spiral. All these plans of the neoliberal driven international institutions caused the highest unemployment rates in centeries, a big drain of money from the country, finally the countries bancrupt and a poverty rate of 56% in 2002. The winners of the policy were elsewhere in the world.

There is no hope here, that the financial institutions, the terms of world trade and currency policy really will be an issue in London. And I am afraid Argentinians are right. Do you hear of it? The summit probably will trade the problems of people who lost their money at the markets, not the problems of those who never could take part in any market.

The world's economy is rotten to the core. And it has been long before AIG collapsed. How about a sudden world summit on world hunger and worldwide disparity? Arent 20.000 people dying of hunger every day no argument for a summit? Therefore, dear readers of this blog, don't leave the national politicians alone in London. I am sure, there will be some clever campaigns, for example of http://attac.de/; http://avaaz.org/; http://www.eed.de/; http://de.indymedia.org/; http://www.altg20.org.uk/.

Unsere Krise

Bei uns klingt Krise anders. Seit 4 Wochen eskaliert der Konflikt zwischen Agrarwirtschaft und Regierung aufs neue. Erinnert ihr euch noch? Der Streit um die Sojaausfuhrsteuern, die erhoeht werden sollten? 99% der Soja Argentiniens werden exportiert, 50% der landwirtschaftlichen Flaeche ist mit Soja bebaut, die Bohne macht 2/3 des Exportgewinnes des Landes aus, 5% der Bauern produzieren 75% der Soja, ich haenge mitten in Resistencia und komme nicht vorwaerts, weil ueberall entzuernte Bauern Maehdrescher auf die Strasse stellen usw. Am Schluss, im Juli 2008, hat dann das Parlament gegen die Regierung gestimmt und so die Erhoehung der Steuern verhindert.

Seitdem ist viel passiert. Der Weltmarktpreis der Soja ist auf das Niveau von 2005 gefallen (also zeitweise auf ein Drittel des Preises von Anfang 2008), die schlimmste Duerre der letzten 60 Jahre hat bei Getreide fuer Ernteverluste von bis zu 50% gesorgt, die Soja ist mit Verlusten von 15% noch ganz gut davon gekommen, dafuer steigt der Dollar dank Weltfinanzkrise unaufhoerlich und faengt Teile der Verluste auf.

Jetzt also sind die Bauern wieder mobilisiert. Diesmal um die Sojaexportsteuern abzusenken, mindestens von 35 auf 25%. Die Regierung hat bereits viele Verguenstigungen wegen Krise und Duerre geschaffen, die Soja aber nicht angeruehrt. Der Agrarwirtschaft reichte es nicht. Sie hat aufs neue eine Woche gestreikt. Am Anfang auch wieder Strassen gesperrt, ich sah mich (auf Tour in der Provinz Entre Rios) schon eine Woche diesmal im schoenen Parana haengen. Zum Glueck konnten wir den Tunnel unter dem Fluss mit Polizeibegleitung und auf Feldwiesen nehmen. Der Ton ist scharf, vielleicht sogar schaerfer als vor 12 Monaten, sonst ist vieles Wiederholung und eine Loesung ist nicht in Sicht. Heute wird der Streik beendet und die Agrarwirtschaft hofft, eine Mehrheit der Parlamentarier auf ihre Seite zu bekommen. Klingt gut-demokratisch, aber auch fernab der Realitat, den Streit im Kongress zu loesen.

Das alles mitten im Wahlkampf. Aufgrund horrender Umfragewerte hat sich Cristina Kircher entschieden, die Wahlen 3 Monate vorzuverlegen. Das geht per Praesidialerlass und Zustimmung des Parlaments, die Huerde wurde vorgestern genommen. Die Oposition ist entzuernt, glaubt, dass so eine gemeinsame Oposition gegen die "Kirchneristas" verhindert werden soll und sucht in aller Eile nach Buendnissen. Nebenbei erlaesst Cristina autoritativ eine Verordnung, die 30% der Sojasteuern an die Provinzen ueberweist, dort wird im Juli gewaehlt und insbesondere die Kirchnerbasis in Gran Buenos Aires wird davon profitieren.

Was tun? Fuer sozialen Ausgleich eintreten, Demokratisierung wuenschen, nachhaltige Sozial - und Umweltpolitik einfordern? Ziele, die in diesem Konflikt in Argentinien unvereinbar sind. Vielleicht koennt ihr beim naechsten mit der argentinischen Soja angezuechteten Schweinmett daran denken, wie ich mich auf Feldwegen um die Blockaden der Agrarwirtschaft herum schleichen muss.

• ein Zwischenseminar mit 54 Beteiligten geleitet und dabei geschaetzte 113 Mal „claro“ gesagt
• bewundert, wie man eine Woche jede Nacht nur 3 Stunden schlafen kann und dennoch tagsueber nicht in Trance faellt
• zum zweiten Mal die brasilianische Seite der Iguazu Wasserfaelle gesehen und dabei vor allem argentinischen Frauen hinterhergeschaut (in Begleitung 5 maennlicher Freiwilliger)
• mich gefreut ueber einen schoenen Abschlussabend und das erste Mal in meinem Leben Wodka Melone getrunken (empfehlenswert!)
• gesehen wie Asuncións Strassen komplett ueberflutet werden, wenn es einmal richtig regnet
• gehoert, wie man in Asuncións Kanalsystem komplett untertauchen kann, weil die Gullideckel geklaut sind und man die Abflussloecher nicht mehr sieht
• 4 Stunden am Grenzuebergang Paraguay-Argentinien gewartet
• weitere 25 Stunden auf der Busfahrt Asunción-Mar del Plata verbracht
• eine Freiwillige mit hohem Fieber begleitet und dabei erfahren, dass der Typhus-Erreger eine Salmonelle ist
• einen Aesthetik-Schock am Strand von Mar del Plata bekommen und den Glauben an die Schoenheit der menschlichen Rasse verloren
• einen Gottesdienst besucht, in dem die Predigt durch gemeinsames in der Bibel Lesen ersetzt wurde
• mein zweites Buch auf Castellano gelesen (Yo, Cumbio), ueber und von Argentiniens beruehmtester 15jaehriger Floggerin
• Besuchslisten, Telefonate, Ueberweisungen, Bewerbungen und mails, mails, mails
• mit Vivi die erste Kneipe mit Kerzen in Buenos Aires gefunden
• Kerstin und Nike aus meinem Studium getroffen und dabei neues von Claudia, Marja, Sandra und Bettina erfahren

Gauchito Gil

As the video prooves, not without the help of higher powers we could overcome all the obstacles on the way. In our case we decided for Gauchito Gil, the famous popular saint of Argentina. Fleeing from the army service in the war between Paraguay, Argentina y Brazil and turning into a kind of Pampa Robin Hood, he was finally sentenced to death and hung on the 8th of january 1878. While dying, he performed his final miracle and predicted his hangman´s son sudden healing from sickness. With his final promise being proven, Gauchito Gil´s legend has spread throughout the country and till today leads to his own community of followers. Everywhere along Argentina´s streets one finds the self build altars, decorated with red flags, sacrifices for the heard pleadings of his believers. Just to make the travel more secure, I recommend to make a stop each morning and give some coins, cigarretes or whiskey to Gauchito and ensure his goodwill.
